Airsoft Tactical Vest: Plate Carrier, Chest Rig or Police Vest, Which One to Choose?

For a first airsoft tactical vest, a JPC plate carrier at €48.99 is enough: light, MOLLE front and back, foam plates included. The 6094 (from €92.99) and the K19 (from €96.99) carry more, the Crye AVS (from €218.99) is for the operator look, and the SMERSH SSO chest rig (from €56.99) remains the lightest option. How to Choose a Tactical Vest: 5 Criteria

1. Your Playing Style

• CQB and speedsoft: a light, compact vest, JPC or chest rig.
• Milsim and long games: a plate carrier that carries magazines, radio and water, such as the 6094, the K19 or the CIRAS.
• Themed outfit: the vest of the unit you are reproducing, GIGN, gendarmerie, Russian or American.

2. Size and Adjustment

A vest adjusts at the shoulders and at the side belt (cummerbund). Stated ranges: JPC 90 to 120 cm, K19 with side plate pockets 80 to 120 cm, RPK SSO 75 to 125 cm. Measure your chest over the jacket you wear when playing.

3. Weight

Empty, the 13-pocket police vest weighs 900 g, the SMERSH SSO about 1.1 kg, the JPC 1.2 kg, the K19 1.3 kg, the 6094 1.55 kg and the CIRAS 1.6 kg (stated weights). Every full magazine adds to that: only fill the pouches you need.

4. MOLLE or Velcro

MOLLE (rows of stitched webbing) takes any standard pouch and holds it firmly. Velcro, on the 900D police gendarmerie vest, lets you move pouches in seconds, but holds heavy loads less well.

5. Dummy Plates

EVA foam plates give the vest its shape without adding weight. The JPC comes with 2 EVA plates of 25 × 30 cm, the AVS with its foam plates, and the "French army" K19 takes S, M or L plates. They are shaping plates, not ballistic protection: see airsoft bulletproof vest.

Adjusting Your Vest Properly

1. Wear the jacket or uniform you will have on when playing.
2. Adjust the shoulders so the top of the front plate sits at the top of the breastbone.
3. Tighten the side belt: you should be able to breathe deeply without the vest moving.
4. Put magazines at the front, radio and water on the sides or at the back.
5. Shoulder your replica: no pouch should get in the way of the stock.
