GIGN Airsoft Outfit: Building a Vest, Helmet and Visor Loadout

A GIGN airsoft outfit comes down to three pieces: a black modular vest, a helmet with side rails and a flip-up visor. Expect €151.97 for a convincing base and €312.97 with our GIGN Elite vest. Wear it on the field only: in France, wearing in public an outfit that can be mistaken for a gendarmerie uniform is an offence.

What makes a GIGN outfit?

The GIGN (Groupe d'intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale) is the French Gendarmerie's elite intervention unit, created in 1974 and based at Versailles-Satory. On operations, its operators stand out through a dark, loaded silhouette: a plate carrier covered in pouches, a railed ballistic helmet and, for the assault, a visor in front of the face.

Recreating this look in airsoft means rebuilding that silhouette with replicas. None of the pieces below stops bullets: they are made for games, milsim and cosplay.

Which vest for a GIGN outfit?

The vest does most of the work. Three options, depending on budget and style.

Helmet and visor: the GIGN signature

The helmet with a visor is what makes people say "GIGN" at first glance. The simplest base is the black FMA FAST AF-01 (€73.99), whose side rails take the GIGN/SWAT visor (€33.99). The visor flips up through 90° with one hand, but it never replaces airsoft glasses or a mask.

"Mastodonte" outfit: what does it mean?

The word comes from video games: Mastodonte is the French name of the Juggernaut in Call of Duty, a soldier covered in armour. In French airsoft, a "Mastodonte" outfit means a heavy, wrap-around silhouette rather than a light vest.

What to wear under the vest?

Black or green?

Black is the most recognisable colour for an intervention look and the most readable in indoor CQB. Green is closer to field uniforms and works better in woodland. The full GIGN kit comes in both; the GIGN Elite vest and the visor come in black only.

Wearing a GIGN outfit safely

In France, article 433-15 of the Penal Code punishes with six months' imprisonment and a €7,500 fine wearing in public a costume, uniform or badge that can be mistaken for those of police officers or soldiers. A well-made GIGN outfit falls squarely into that case. Other countries have similar rules.

• Carry everything in a bag and get changed at the field.
• No "Gendarmerie" or "GIGN" patches outside the playing area, car park included.
• Ask the organiser: some fields do not allow law enforcement outfits.
