An airsoft chest rig is a magazine harness worn on the chest, without plates: lighter and cooler than a plate carrier, it keeps magazines within reach. At BDU Airsoft, the SMERSH SSO chest rig (from €56.99, about 1.1 kg) is the most versatile, and the RPK SSO (€135.99) stands out with its flap that flips over the head. This guide helps you choose between a chest rig and a plate carrier, then adjust and organise yours.

Chest Rig or Plate Carrier?

For plate carriers, see airsoft plate carrier: JPC, K19, 6094 or AVS.

Both models reproduce Russian equipment: how to use them in a Ratnik or Tarkov loadout is covered in Russian airsoft chest rig.
Adjusting a Chest Rig
- Set the height: the magazines should sit between the bottom of the breastbone and the navel, where your hand finds them without searching.
- Cross and tighten the shoulder straps at the back so the rig doesn't tip forward.
- Tighten the waist strap: the rig should not bounce when you run.
- Lie down on the ground: if the magazines lift you too much, lower the rig slightly.
Organising Your Chest Rig
- Centre: rifle magazines.
- Support side: the radio, antenna up.
- Strong side: a pistol magazine or small utility pouch.
- Water bottle pouch: water, especially in hot weather.
Only fill what you use during the game: a chest rig loaded like a plate carrier loses its weight advantage.
Care
- Brush off mud once dry.
- Empty the pouches and dry them open after a game in the rain.
- Check buckles and velcro before each game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which airsoft chest rig should I choose?
The SMERSH SSO from €56.99 for a light, versatile rig, the RPK SSO at €135.99 for access to the contents through a flip-over flap and wear at the waist or on the back.
Chest rig or plate carrier: which should I choose?
A chest rig to play light and cool, or for a Russian outfit. A plate carrier to carry more and for a modern military outfit.
At what height should a chest rig be worn?
Magazines between the bottom of the breastbone and the navel, so you can grab them without searching and lie down without being hindered.
Does a chest rig protect against BBs?
Very little: it has no plates. It is for carrying equipment. Only eye and face protection really protect you.
