Airsoft Bulletproof Vest: What It Really Protects and Which One to Choose

Gilet porte-plaque airsoft en Oxford 600D

In airsoft, a "bulletproof vest" is a replica of a military vest or plate carrier, with foam or light plastic plates: it softens BB hits on the torso and carries your equipment, but it does not stop a bullet. At BDU Airsoft, the simplest models start at €48.99 (JPC) and €51.99 (600D plate carrier). This guide explains what these vests protect, which protection is really mandatory, and how to choose.

This article is part of our guide airsoft tactical vest.

What an Airsoft Bulletproof Vest Does, and Doesn't Do

It does It doesn't
Soften BB hits on the chest and back Protect against firearms: the plates are foam or plastic
Carry magazines, radio and water thanks to MOLLE Protect the eyes, face or hands
Give the silhouette of a military or intervention vest Replace the protection required by the field

The words "ballistic", "level III" or "Kevlar" seen on some replicas refer to the model being copied, not a certification.

Which Protection Is Mandatory in Airsoft?

The vest comes next: it improves comfort and realism, it replaces none of this protection.

Plates: Which Ones to Put in an Airsoft Vest?

Use EVA foam or light plastic plates: they give the vest its shape, keep pouches flat and cushion BBs a little. Don't use real ballistic plates: they weigh several kilos, tire you quickly and add nothing in airsoft.

Choosing the Size and Adjusting the Vest

  1. Measure your chest over the jacket you wear when playing.
  2. Check the adjustment range on the product page: 90 to 120 cm for the JPC, 80 to 120 cm for the K19 with side plate pockets.
  3. Adjust the shoulders: the top of the front plate sits at the top of the breastbone.
  4. Tighten the sides without restricting breathing.
  5. Shoulder your replica to check that no pouch gets in the way of the stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an airsoft bulletproof vest stop a bullet?

No. Airsoft vests are replicas with foam or light plastic plates. They soften BBs, not projectiles from firearms.

Is a vest mandatory in airsoft?

No. Only eye protection is mandatory everywhere; lower face protection is strongly recommended. The vest is for comfort, carrying kit and realism.

Which cheap airsoft bulletproof vest should I choose?

The JPC plate carrier at €48.99, supplied with 2 EVA foam plates, or the 600D plate carrier from €51.99, supplied with 3 pouches.

Should you put plates in an airsoft vest?

It is recommended so the vest holds its shape. Choose EVA foam or light plastic plates, never real ballistic plates, which are too heavy.
