Two names appear constantly in listings and searches: AAP-01 Assassin and AAP-01 Black Mamba. Many buyers believe these are two superior versions of the replica. This is false in both cases, and this confusion frequently costs money when buying second-hand. Let's clarify.
"Assassin": it's simply the name of the AAP-01
Action Army markets its replica under the full name AAP-01 Assassin. It is not a variation, not a limited series, and not an upgraded version: it is the commercial designation for the standard model, which everyone simply calls the "AAP-01".
Practical consequence: an "AAP-01 Assassin" listing without further specification describes a stock replica. If the asking price is higher than that of a new AAP-01, the seller is charging for a name, not for parts. Always ask for the list of what has actually been changed internally.

"Black Mamba": an upper kit, not a replica
The Black Mamba is a CNC aluminum upper receiver kit produced by Action Army for the AAP-01. It is a spare part, sold separately, that replaces the top of the replica. It exists in two versions, commonly called Kit A (Alpha) and Kit B (Bravo), which differ in design and pattern rather than function.
What the kit actually provides:
- a full-length top picatinny rail, for an optic;
- lower front rails, for a flashlight or laser;
- metal sights, adjustable at the rear;
- a muzzle brake / compensator integrated into the design;
- the rigidity and appearance of machined aluminum instead of polymer.
It is "drop-in," meaning it installs without any machining. An "AAP-01 Black Mamba" listing therefore describes a standard replica equipped with this kit—the internal parts could very well be completely stock.
What the Black Mamba does not change
No upper kit affects the trajectory of the BB. Grouping depends on the hop-up chamber, the bucking, and the inner barrel, not the material of the receiver. A Black Mamba mounted on stock mechanics will shoot the same BBs to the same place, with better rails and a better-looking photo.
However, two side effects are real:
- The mass increases. Aluminum is heavier than the original polymer. A higher moving mass slows the cycle down slightly, which is noticeable especially in cold weather or with a chilled magazine.
- The balance changes. With a compensator and an optic at the front, the replica becomes front-heavy, which is noticeable when drawing.
And the usual rule applies: if the bolt is lightened at the same time the upper is changed, you must adapt the springs—a 200% nozzle spring and a 160% recoil spring. The details are in the spring guide and on our page on CNC uppers, grips, and stocks.
How to read a "custom" AAP-01 listing
Commercial names are multiplying: Assassin, Black Mamba, and all the names invented by workshops, including our own. The only reliable criterion is the parts list. Three questions are enough to sort things out:
- What has been changed internally? Hop-up bucking, inner barrel, chamber, nozzle, hammer: if the answer is vague, it’s just cosmetic.
- Is the bolt stock or lightened, and with which springs? A seller who cannot answer didn't perform the assembly themselves.
- Was the replica chronographed after assembly? That is the only measurement that counts.
The complete checklist for second-hand buys is in our external parts guide, and the damage caused by poorly performed assembly is in AAP-01 that doesn't work after an upgrade.
Our position
A Black Mamba is a beautiful object and a great platform for accessories. It is not a performance upgrade, and it should not be sold as such. Custom Lab builds approach the problem from the other end: the exterior remains stock and the budget goes into the mechanics, from the Grouping Edition (€238) to the Integral Edition (€350), with each replica being assembled, tuned, and chronographed before shipping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the AAP-01 Assassin different from the AAP-01?
No. "Assassin" is the full commercial name of the Action Army AAP-01. It is the same replica.
Is the Black Mamba a complete replica?
No, it is a CNC aluminum upper receiver kit for the AAP-01, sold as a spare part and installed as a drop-in component.
What is the difference between Black Mamba Kit A and Kit B?
The two kits are distinguished by the design and pattern of the upper rather than their function: both provide rails, sights, and a compensator.
Does the Black Mamba improve accuracy?
No. Accuracy depends on the hop-up bucking, the chamber, and the inner barrel. The kit provides rails, rigidity, and aesthetics.
How do I know if a second-hand AAP-01 is truly custom?
By asking for the list of internal parts changed, the nature of the bolt and springs installed, and whether the replica was chronographed after assembly.
A name says nothing about the hop-up bucking
With us, every edition specifies what is actually installed and is checked via chronograph before departure.
