In airsoft, the only protection that is always mandatory is eye protection: impact-resistant glasses or a mask, worn at all times in the game zone. Next come lower-face protection (often required for minors and in CQB), gloves, a helmet depending on your play style, and knee pads if you often play kneeling. This guide explains what to wear, how to fit it and the mistakes that lead to injuries.
The essentials
- Eyes first: never sunglasses, prescription glasses on their own or mesh in front of the eyes.
- Lower face: teeth and lips are fragile, protection is strongly recommended.
- Test everything before the game: helmet, glasses and mask must fit together with no gaps.
- Never remove anything in the game zone, even when fog gets in the way: go to the safe zone.
- Site rules come first: check them before your first game.

Protecting your eyes
This protection is non-negotiable. There are two formats:
- Ballistic or tactical glasses: light, compatible with a helmet and ear defenders, but they leave the lower face exposed.
- Full-face mask: it protects eyes and face in one piece, at the cost of more heat and fog.
Choose a model designed to withstand impacts. In Europe, the reference standard for eye protectors is EN 166: the mechanical strength marking (F, then B, then A, from the least to the most severe test) shows the impact level tested. Many sites state their requirement in their rules.
Avoid: sunglasses or prescription glasses without protection over them, and any mesh in front of the eyes, which can let BB fragments through. If you wear prescription glasses, choose a mask or over-glasses designed to fit over them.
Fog, the main reason protection comes off
A player who cannot see is tempted to lift their glasses: that is the most dangerous moment. Anti-fog treatment, ventilation and good airflow around the face solve the problem. Protecting the lower face

Knee and elbow pads
In CQB, on concrete or gravel, you often kneel and drop to the ground. Knee and elbow pads prevent the knocks and scrapes that make players quit a game.

Adjust the straps so the pad stays in place when you run, without cutting off circulation behind the knee or elbow.
Torso and neck

Putting on your protection in the right order
- Outfit and gloves, then knee and elbow pads.
- Vest or chest rig, adjusted to the day's clothing.
- Helmet, tight enough not to tip when you run.
- Lower-face protection, fitted under the helmet.
- Glasses or mask last: no gap between the foam and your face, strap secure over or under the helmet depending on the model.
- Test: turn your head, shoulder the replica, run a few metres. Nothing should move or leave a gap around the eyes.
Mistakes that cause injuries
- Lifting your glasses in the game zone because of fog.
- Using mesh in front of the eyes.
- Playing with sunglasses or prescription glasses alone.
- Leaving a gap between glasses and mask, where a BB can slip in.
- Removing protection before reaching the safe zone, with replicas made safe.
