Players think upgrading springs just means "buying stiffer springs". That is completely wrong. There are three sources of weakness: not enough tension for a full cycle, springs that don't match the bolt, or simple material fatigue. A frequent DIY mistake is a spring fitted backwards or in the wrong position. The result: no improvement, or an even worse problem. In the workshop, premium springs are checked one by one on a force gauge before fitting.
Three Causes of Spring Weakness
Cause 1: Tension lost over cycles - Material fatigue. A stock spring loses 30-40% of its tension after 2,000 cycles. Fix: replace it with a reinforced spring, at 100% on a stock bolt (no tension gain), or with the 160%/200% pair on a lightweight bolt. Cause 2: Springs that don't match the bolt - The recoil/nozzle pair doesn't suit the bolt mass, for example over-tensioned springs on a stock bolt. The result is an unbalanced cycle. Fix: the pair matched to the bolt fitted. Cause 3: Incorrect installation - Spring reversed, badly seated or over-compressed. The result is no gain or worse performance. Fix: visual inspection plus a tension check after assembly.
AAP-01 Spring Percentages: Recoil/Bolt and Nozzle, How to Choose for Your Bolt
GBB high-tension springs are sold as a percentage of stock tension (100% = stock). The right recoil/bolt and nozzle combination depends directly on the weight of the bolt fitted: a lightweight bolt (CNC, hollowed out) no longer has the inertia of a stock zamak bolt, and the balance between the two springs has to take that into account to keep the seal and reliability.

Tension percentages relative to the stock spring (100% = manufacturer reference). A 100% reinforced spring keeps stock tension: it is more durable, not stiffer.
Why the gap between recoil and nozzle on a lightweight bolt? A lighter bolt has less mass, so less inertia at the end of its travel: without compensation, the nozzle may not push deep enough into the hop-up bucking, causing gas leaks and power loss. A 200% nozzle spring forces that full contact on every cycle, while 160% on the recoil/bolt keeps a crisp recoil feel without overloading the parts. On a stock bolt, a stiffer spring brings nothing and even hurts reliability in cold weather: we fit 100% reinforced springs, with no tension gain.
