A Hi-Capa that leaks gas almost always leaks through the magazine: a worn gas route seal, a leaking outlet or fill valve, or dried-out magazine body seals. A slide that no longer cycles usually comes from a lack of pressure (cold, nearly empty magazine), a recoil spring that is too stiff, friction or a badly reassembled nozzle. The Hi-Capa Leaks Gas: Check the Magazine
1. The Soapy Water Test
Fill the magazine, then brush a little soapy water onto the fill valve, the outlet valve and the sides. Bubbles show the leak. Wipe and dry thoroughly afterwards.
2. The Gas Route Seal
This is the small seal at the top of the magazine that the replica presses against. Worn or split, it lets gas escape instead of going into the nozzle. It is a cheap wear part to replace.
3. The Valves
A leaking fill valve can be tightened with the right key, without forcing. An outlet valve that stays open after a shot may be dirty or tired: clean it, lubricate it with a drop of silicone oil, then replace it if the problem persists.
4. Magazine Body Seals
Dried-out seals let the reservoir leak. A drop of silicone oil in the fill valve from time to time and storage with a little gas keep them supple.
The Slide No Longer Cycles: Check the Replica
1. Pressure
In cool weather, green gas pressure drops and the slide no longer has the force for a full cycle. Warm the magazines in a pocket between shots and check the magazine isn't nearly empty.
2. The Recoil Spring
A recoil spring that is too stiff for the available pressure slows the slide. This is common after fitting a heavier metal slide or a poorly chosen reinforced spring.
3. Friction
Sand, dust or dry rails slow the slide. Clean the rails and the spring guide, then apply a thin coat of silicone oil.
4. The Nozzle on Reassembly
After disassembly, the nozzle must be properly seated in the hop-up chamber before refitting the spring guide, and the guide must be pushed fully against the blowback unit. A badly placed nozzle leaks gas and prevents cycling.
5. The Nozzle Spring
If it is too weak or deformed, the nozzle returns poorly and the replica feeds badly. Only change it once the other causes have been ruled out.
Prevent Rather Than Repair
- Silicone oil in the magazine valves every few games, never petroleum lubricant.
- Magazines stored with a little gas, at room temperature.
- Clean, lightly oiled slide rails.
- Methodical reassembly after each disassembly, checking the nozzle.
