Broken Hammer on an AAP-01: Symptoms, Causes and Switching to Steel

The stock AAP-01 hammer is cast in zamak, and it is the replica's known weak point: it eventually gives way under heavy use, especially in full-auto or on HPA. The signs are clear: runaway full-auto, a click with no shot or a jammed slide. The lasting fix is a steel hammer kit, properly fitted and greased, with a check of the sear.

⚠️ The common myth:

"Just change the hammer." The hammer and the sear work together. If the sear is worn, a new hammer holds no better and the runaway bursts continue. Always check both parts.

Symptoms of a Broken Hammer

Symptom What is happening
Full-auto while the selector is on semi The hammer notch or the sear no longer holds
Click with no shot The hammer no longer strikes the valve properly
Slide jammed halfway A piece of hammer is blocking the mechanism

Runaway full-auto can also come from another trigger group fault: see AAP-01 stuck in full-auto.

Why the Zamak Hammer Breaks

Zamak is a zinc alloy that is easy to cast but brittle: under repeated impacts it builds up fatigue cracks instead of flexing slightly. The most stressed area is the notch that holds the cocked hammer. Several factors speed up wear:

  • Full-auto, which multiplies cycles.
  • HPA or a strong gas, which increase the force needed to open the valve.
  • Lack of grease at the hammer and sear contact.
  • Springs that don't match the bolt, which unbalance the cycle.

Zamak or Steel: What Changes

Hammer Material Behaviour
Stock Zamak (zinc alloy) Fine for moderate use, fails under heavy use, full-auto or HPA
Steel kit (TTI, CTM…) Steel Built to handle full-auto and HPA

Replacing the Hammer: the Steps

  1. Remove the magazine and check the replica is empty.
  2. Work over a tray: the trigger group contains tiny springs that fly out during disassembly.
  3. Remove the trigger group and recover every piece of the broken hammer.
  4. Check the sear: if its edge is worn or rounded, replace it along with the hammer.
  5. Fit the steel kit, greasing the contact points. Depending on the kit, a slight adjustment may be needed for a smooth cycle.
  6. Test without gas: reset on semi, then on full-auto, before adding gas.

👤 Switching to HPA?

The steel hammer is then no longer optional. See our guide to the AAP-01 HPA conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace just the hammer?

You can, but check the sear too: if it is worn, it keeps causing runaway bursts. Many steel hammer kits replace it at the same time.

How can I tell if my AAP-01 hammer is broken?

Full-auto while the selector is on semi, a click with no shot, or a slide jammed by a piece of metal: these are the three typical signs.

Is a steel hammer essential on HPA?

Yes. Under pressure that is constant and higher than gas, the stock zamak hammer eventually breaks.

Does a steel hammer fit without adjustment?

Not always. Depending on the kit and the replica, a slight adjustment may be needed to keep the cycle smooth. Test without gas before using gas.

About BDU Airsoft

BDU Airsoft is a French airsoft store. Its workshop, the Custom Lab, opened in 2026: every AAP-01 is assembled by hand, with each part checked one by one, torque-wrench assembly, a 600-cycle break-in and chrono validation before shipping.
